Restoration - Shoreline
The typical treatment for an eroding slope is to blanket the slope with a layer of riprap. The blasted stone rarely resembles the local bedrock, and is almost always much paler than anything nearby. Riprap may be necessary in some cases, but it is an eyesore, and we have yet to encounter a site which would not be better treated by restoring the natural structure of the shore. Stable shorelines in northern Maine typically combine some exposed bedrock with a little soil and lots of tree roots holding it all together. We use techniques drawn from the principles of bio-engineering to analyse and stabilize eroded slopes. Please note that all work performed close to the shoreline requires permits from the local authorities and from the state Department of Environmental Protection. The difficulty of obtaining these permits corresponds to the size and impact of the proposed work.
